Diabetes Short Breath
My cat has diabetes and is badly panting….what should I do?
My cat is 11 years old and has diabetes for about 3 months now. She is taking insulin as usual but tonight it looks like she is having a hard time breathing and she is panting pretty badly. She is taking really short breaths. Does anyone have any ideas on what could be wrong and/or what I shoul do?
how well is her diabetes under control? while it’s not very common, she may be heading into ketoacidosis especially if her sugar levels have been up and down. this is a true emergency in a diabetic cat, so if she is developing this, she needs to be seen ASAP. (you can tell better if her breath smells “fruity” or like nail polish remover at all, but not having this present doesn’t mean it’s not going on.) panting can be a sign of it, although it can just be a sign of her being uncomfortable or in pain, as well.
either way, she needs to go in to the vet tonite. labored breathing & prolonged panting is never a good thing to ignore. call you vet to see what he wants you to do or contact an after-hours emergency vet in your area.
